42 million Toll-Free Numbers (2019)
Since their introduction in the mid-1960s, Toll-Free Numbers have connected people within North America. In today’s era of unlimited voice minutes and internet-based chat apps, not only are Toll-Free Numbers enduring, their use is growing!

In fact, Toll-Free recently hit a new milestone, more than 42 MILLION Toll-Free Numbers are now in use throughout the U.S., Canada and parts of the Caribbean. That represents an almost 40% increase over the past decade alone.

Unlike many technologies born around the same time, Toll-Free Numbers continue to operate in their original form, empowering more intimate and trusted interconnections between brands, consumers and communities.

However, Toll-Free numbers have also gained new capabilities. Modern businesses have come to recognize that Toll-Free Numbers can be much more than simple phone numbers; they are powerful tools that can be leveraged to drive sales, improve marketing and create a differentiated brand experience.

Toll-Free Numbers are more powerful than ever and remain a critical link to a company’s most valuable customers. When customers dial in, they often have a complex problem or question that can be answered only by speaking with another human. When phone calls are part of a business’s marketing strategy, companies are better able to attract engaged customers, build a relationship through person-to-person conversation and drive sales.

Toll-Free Numbers continue to be a premier platform for customers and businesses to connect, innovate and grow with confidence.

What is a Toll-Free Number
- and How Does it Work?

Toll-free numbers are telephone numbers with distinct three-digit codes that can be dialed from landlines with no charge to the person placing the call. Such numbers allow callers to reach businesses out of the area without being charged a long-distance fee for the call.

Toll-free numbers are particularly common for customer service calling. Toll-free service has traditionally provided potential customers and others with a free and convenient way to contact businesses. Wireless callers, however, will be charged for the airtime minutes used during a toll-free call unless they have an “unlimited calling” plan.

Customers can also send text messages to toll-free numbers, so long as those numbers are “text enabled,” and businesses can send texts in response.

Toll-free Codes:– 800 888 877 866 855 844 833 and 822
Toll-free numbers are numbers that begin with one of the following three-digit codes: 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844, 833 or 822. Although 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844, 833 or 822 are all toll-free codes, they are not interchangeable. Dialing a number using a 1-866 prefix would reach a different recipient than dialing that number using a 1-844 prefix. Calls to each toll-free number are routed to a particular local telephone number.

How are toll-free numbers assigned?
Toll-free numbers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis by entities called "RespOrgs." Many of these entities also provide toll-free service. RespOrgs are certified by Somos Inc.

The FCC sets the rules for getting and using toll-free numbers. The FCC requires that toll-free numbers be portable, meaning that a subscriber can "port," or move, their number to a new RespOrg when changing service providers.

However, the FCC is not involved in the actual assignment of toll-free numbers and cannot access the number database. Nor can the FCC provide any information about the status of a number.

What is a vanity number?
A "vanity" number is a toll-free telephone number that spells a name, word or acronym chosen by the subscriber, such as

Toll-Free Number use in Marketing
is similar to Domain Name use in Marketing

In fact, more efficiently due to the live transactional voice component.

Many small businesses are fine with using one domain name, companies of all sizes can certainly benefit from registering multiple domain names as part of their domain name strategy. Having multiple domain names can provide sound marketing opportunities to engage your customers and to help grow your business.

Domain Name versatily
Depending on the type of marketing campaign you’re running, you have the flexibility to tailor your approach.

For example, you can utilize a domain name for something that requires very little investment of your time or money by simply pointing a specific domain name back to your existing website, or redirecting it to your business’s social media page. But if you have more time and/or a larger budget, you can create a campaign-specific landing page or even develop an entirely new website.

Let’s consider some of the following more specific strategies on how to leverage a domain name in your marketing:

Highly targeted campaigns
If you’re thinking of launching a one-off marketing campaign that targets a very specific or distinct audience from your company’s core audience, consider using a different domain name that points to a new landing page. A giveaway, special event, loyalty program, trade show or even a commercial are good examples of when you might want to use a unique domain name and landing page that is separate from your main website.

Specific products and services
Sometimes it makes sense to “brand” a specific product or service with its own domain name and website. Just look at Coca-Cola, where many of their popular products have their own dedicated websites, such as, and

Getting creative
Marketing can be tough in a heavily saturated market, you have many options when it comes to creating a domain name to help boost your efforts, especially in terms of user memorability and search.

You don’t have to register thousands of domain names to succeed in today’s competitive marketplace. But with a good domain name strategy in place, you can use a few additional domain names to enhance your marketing efforts, which could help create more opportunities to grow your business and keep your existing customers and clients highly engaged.
