Mexico City Vote Tampering Problems
Mexico has an unfortunate -- and recent -- history of vote tampering. However, given the escalation of his supporters' rhetoric (threatening to close down the Mexico City airport, for instance) and the increasing frustration many Mexicans feel about their tent cities, disruptive rallies and inability to consider compromise, it's doubtful Lopez Obrador could win another election.
While we take issue with Lopez Obrador's sometimes overwrought rhetoric, we agree that a full recount is the best way to resolve this. Calderon and his supporters have assumed an unnecessarily arrogant and unbudging posture on the subject of a recount. But if he truly won -- as a new voting tribunal and many international election observers believe -- then they have nothing to fear and everything to gain from a full recount. As for Lopez Obrador and his supporters, they deserve to see proof of an honest election.
A full recount will be costly and cumbersome. But it may be the only way to to persuade a wary nation of its democracy's integrity.
