Immigration - Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on Wednesday announced the appointment of the agency’s “border czar” tasked with overseeing U.S. efforts to fight cash-, drug- and gun-smuggling operations along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The appointee, former U.S. attorney Alan Bersin, will also oversee illegal-immigration initiatives in the region. Bersin served in a similar position under President Clinton and is credited with tempering the lawlessness in the region in the 1990s.

Obama is seeking $66 million in assistance for Mexico on top of the $300 million Congress approved in the recently enacted omnibus spending bill.

Napolitano’s announcement comes the day before Obama is scheduled to meet with Calderon in Mexico City. Napolitano has been on a U.S. tour of the Southwest in recent weeks, making several trips into Mexico to meet with officials overseeing drug-fighting efforts.

Attorney General Eric Holder joined Napolitano two weeks ago for a meeting with the Mexican attorney general and the Interior minister where they discussed plans to increase dealings between the U.S. Coast Guard and the Mexican navy to blunt the efforts of illegal immigrants and drug smugglers in the Pacific Ocean.
