Immigration Reform Letters 2
Immigration - Immigration reform must value the families of United States citizens and legal permanent residents. Currently, even United States citizens face separation from their spouses for up to 10 years because of draconian penalties imposed for irregular status. Citizen children have no means to legal status for the parents who support and raise them. Backlogs for family-based visas separate even nuclear family members for years.
Changes removing these impediments should be made immediately and not be sidelined by debate about economic impact. Citizens and residents who petition for family members must already sign affidavits of financial support for their non-citizen relatives.

Immigration - President Obama, like his predecessor, President George W. Bush, pushes for amnesty for 12 million illegal immigrants.
Forget the fact that we are in a deep recession and that Americans need all the jobs they can get. This amnesty is plain and simple wrong. It undermines the rule of law that is critical for this nation to stand as a republic.
America should remain a safe haven for its own citizens, and for millions more who seek entrance to this country through legal channels. These illegal immigrants have no business being here in their present status. This nation has no business offering these lawbreakers a pass to citizenship.

Janet Napolitanontment New Border Czar
Immigration - Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on Wednesday announced the appointment of the agency’s “border czar” tasked with overseeing U.S. efforts to fight cash-, drug- and gun-smuggling operations along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The appointee, former U.S. attorney Alan Bersin, will also oversee illegal-immigration initiatives in the region. Bersin served in a similar position under President Clinton and is credited with tempering the lawlessness in the region in the 1990s.

Obama Immigration Debate Search
Immigration - President Obama doesn't plan to begin pushing his agenda on immigration until May, but many are looking for clues about his intentions in what he's already said.
Immigrants' supporters can point to Obama arguing for a mechanism to give longtime residents a way "to get out of the shadows."
Anti-immigration groups can point to Obama stating that they depress wages because "they're often pitted against American workers and can't join a union."
Obama has not listed immigration reform among the ambitious programs he is pushing this year but has said he still supports "comprehensive immigration reform."
Perhaps most telling for those searching for hints on how Obama will approach this issue was the first immigration raid under his administration, which took place in Bellingham, Wash., in late February.
Latino Voters Republicans Immigration Reform
Jan 2009 - Republicans and Latino Voters: Has the GOP Shifted on Immigration Reform? Some blamed losses in the fall on losing support from Latino voters, among other groups.
After their dramatic losses in the fall elections, Republican leaders spent weeks publicly flogging themselves not just for losing the support of millions of Reagan Democrats and suburban moms but for pushing away Latino voters, in particular, one of the country's fastest-growing demographic groups.

Janet Napolitanos Anti Illegal Immigrant Operations
Arizona - Former Governor Janet Napolitano fled the state the second she got a better offer, leaving it in the hands of the Republicans she typically opposed.
Now the legislature is offering her a symbolic middle finger, not only slashing some of her pet programs, but also reportedly "poised" to slam back into the state budget the $1.6 million she took away from Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's anti-illegal-immigrant operations -- and at a time when they're cutting most everything else. This blog was the first to report the story of the cuts back in May.

Senator Judd Gregg Immigration Reforms
Gregg's stances on immigration similar to Obama's By Bob Cusack
Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), who is under consideration to be nominated as Commerce secretary, has supported contentious immigration legislation that sharply divided his party.
President Obama's Commerce secretary is expected to play a major role in immigration reform discussions. Gregg has attracted criticism in conservative circles for his stance on immigration, including a vote in 2006 for a bill that Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass) called "the most far-reaching immigration reform in our history." The legislation, which would have allowed millions of illegal immigrants to stay in the country and ultimately earn citizenship, later died in conference.
