Legal Access Program Pro Bono |
|
The Legal Access Program improves access to legal advice and counseling and increase rates of representation for immigrants appearing before the Immigration Courts and Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA).
This has been carried out primarily through initiatives which facilitate access to information and create new incentives for attorneys and law students to accept pro bono cases.
The Legal Access Program focuses on three main initiatives - the Legal Orientation Program (LOP), the BIA Pro Bono Project, and interagency initiatives aimed at improving access to pro bono legal services for Unaccompanied Alien Children. The Program also continues to promote and develop the Model Hearing Program. Lawyers are generally subject to some kind of official recommendation that they voluntarily provide a certain number of hours of free pro bono services to the poor each year. |
